Thiruvannmalai aka Arunachala

Hindu Puranas(Mythology) tell us that there was a dispute between God Vishnu and God Brahma as to who is superior.

They approached God Siva to remain as the Judge for resolving the dispute, and requested for a task to be completed by them.

God Siva agreed and grew into a beam of fire or "Jyothir linga "(Sanskrit meaning Linga of light) which stood extending infinitely between Earth (land)and Heaven (sky), and he asked them to find the root and crown of his person.

God Brahma took the form a swan and flew upward to seek the upper end of the beam (crown of God Shiva), But he could not succeed. However, during the search trip,
he caught hold of a flower of Thazmpoo (Fragrant Screw Pine in English) falling from Siva's crown. Brahma requested the flower to stand a witness that he collected it from Siva's crown.

God Vishnu assumed the form of pig and kept digging down into the earth, But he returned without finding the base of Fire (feet of God Siva). He declared his defeat to God Shiva. who in turn was touched by the humility of Vishnu and took him his heart.

Then, Shiva appeared out of the fire or 'jyothir linga' and stated that he was the progenitor of them both and that henceforth he should be worshiped in his phallus form, that is the 'lingam', and not in his anthropomorphic form.

Since Brahma lied, Lord Siva cursed  he would never be worshiped in any temple, and also banished the said Thazampoo flower from any poojas done on God Shiva.

This divine event is reported to have taken place at Thiruvannamalai, Tamilnadu, India. This is the reason this small and holy town is said to remain hot throughout the year.
